    Open & Compassionate Adoption

What is Compassionate Adoption?

  • Keeps the central focus of the adoption plan on the needs of the baby or child.
  • Gives attention to the unique needs of each individual involved in the adoption plan.
  • Recognizes that adoption is a lifelong process based on trust, honesty and mutual responsibility.
  • A pregnant woman/couple has the option to choose and meet the prospective adoptive family.
  • Through the support and guidance of a Friends in Adoption agency counselor, a pregnant woman/couple and the chosen adoptive family can build a foundation for a healthy lifelong relationship.
  • A pregnant woman/couple can choose the level of openness they prefer.
  • A pregnant woman/couple and the adoptive family create a legally enforceable adoption agreement outlining ongoing visits and the exchange of letters and pictures.

What are the Benefits of Compassionate Adoption?
The ongoing contact enables the birthparents to see for themselves that the child is thriving in the adoptive home. This helps them feel at peace with the adoption. Likewise, secure in the knowledge that the birthparents fully support the adoption, the adoptive family are free to welcome the birthparents into their lives. And most importantly, the relationship gives the child direct access to information and support from the birthparents; this allows for the development of the child’s identity and self-esteem.

What are many of the benefits FIA can offer you?

  • A Friends in Adoption counselor assists all pregnant women/couples on an individual basis and encourages them to explore all of their options.
  • Financial assistance is available to you throughout your pregnancy and birth.
  • If you decide that adoption is your choice, you will be empowered to create your own vision of the open adoption experience.
  • All of the prospective adoptive families that work with Friends in Adoption have a strong commitment to openness in adoption and desire an ongoing relationship with you at the level you are comfortable with.
  • You choose from a large selection of carefully screened and well-prepared prospective adoptive families.
  • The compassionate adoption agreement that you and your chosen adoptive family create for ongoing contact continues until the child is an adult.
  • Support groups and individual counseling are available before, during and after placement at no cost to you.

FIA works to find the best option for you...

Friends in Adoption can help you determine which option best suits your needs by assessing your individual situation. Remember that you certainly do not have to have made your final decision before contacting us. In an atmosphere of dignity and openness and without pressure to make a particular decision, we explore the various options with you, and consider a series of questions together.

Working with FIA for counseling of your options is a free service we offer to all pregnant women/couples.

With our assistance you will be prepared to make your final decision. If you decide to parent, we will refer you to helpful agencies and community resources. If you choose abortion, we will supply you with appropriate information and referral services. If you find yourself unprepared to parent, or unable to parent a child that is already born, adoption may be an option.
