FIA stands in support of our LGBTQ+ community!

Friends in Adoption (FIA) was one of the pioneer agencies in welcoming all families to the family of adoption and from its early years has promoted adoption by lesbian and gay parents.

For the sake of children and families, FIA is proud to continue its good work in open adoption for all, and we are grateful to our allied partners who join us in promoting and supporting adoption “done right.”

Inclusiveness means treating all people with equality… We respect the uniqueness of each individual and welcome diversity within the circle of adoption!

Happy Pride Month from the Friends in Adoption family!

June is an exciting month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ individuals, their unique experiences, histories, and honoring the numerous ways they enrich our communities, and the world!

The month of June commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, a pivotal event in the early stages of the LGBTQ+ Rights Movement. Pride Month is revered throughout the country and is a wonderful time to honor, cheer and celebrate the many facets of LGBTQ+ experiences. Pride in NYC is celebrating 50 years!
Those of you who are familiar with our agency know well that we stand proudly and fiercely with the LGBTQ+ community. FIA has always welcomed and honored all families and all individuals. We are committed to helping make every person feel safe, validated, supported and successful.
Our lives, experiences and identities are—without a doubt—entirely unique and individual. FIA is here to provide meaningful, compassionate, lifelong support for all people we work with.

FIA will always proudly stand with the LGBTQ+ community.
Reach out to your local LGBTQ center, and look online for all upcoming events and happenings related to Pride Month!

Friends in Adoption (FIA) celebrates June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month. Looking back 47 years ago to June 1969, the Stonewall Riots in New York City defined a turning point in the advancement of civil rights and Gay Pride. Many of us can remember when people who identified as LGBTQ were not approved as adoptive parents because of their sexual orientation or identity. Thankfully, and to the benefit of many, many children and families, our society has evolved and things are getting better. FIA is proud of its history in helping to bring about this progress!

Recently, some FIA staffers had a great conversation with our friends and allied colleagues at Open Adoption and Family Services (OAFS), located in Oregon. We were discussing that “not all adoption is created equal.” Still today, an extremely high percentage of adoption agencies in the United States are religiously affiliated, many of which oppose adoption by LGBTQ individuals. There are only a very few agencies like FIA and OAFS in the entire country that promote fully open adoption, lifelong support, respect for ALL of a woman’s choices regarding pregnancy decisions, and inclusiveness such that neither prospective adoptive nor birth families are discriminated against on the basis of race, ethnicity, marital status, age, religion, physical disability, income, sexual orientation, or gender identity/expression.

For the sake of children and families, FIA is proud to continue its good work in open adoption for all, and we are grateful to our allied partners who join us in promoting and supporting adoption “done right.”

President Obama Evolves on Same-Sex Marriage
President Obama Affirms His Support for Same Sex Marriage

President Obama’s announcement today that he supports marriage equality is not only a great victory for marriage equality nationwide, but it is also directly linked to achieving fairness in adoption rights by same-sex couples. We are thankful that our President evolved and stood up for what’s right! Thank you, Mr. President! — Friends in Adoption

To help you say THANK YOU to our President, we are happy to share this letter from Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign (hrc.org):

Just moments ago, President Obama made history by boldly stating that gay and lesbian Americans deserve full marriage equality.

In saying so, he reinforced what most Americans believe – LGBT people should be fully and equally part of the fabric of our society. Our families deserve nothing less than the equal respect and recognition that comes through marriage.

President Obama’s time in office has shown that our nation can move beyond its shameful history of discrimination and injustice.

I hope you’ll join me in sending President Obama a heartfelt thank-you note right now.

Thanks to President Obama’s leadership, millions of young Americans have seen that their futures will not be limited by what makes them different.

And now, in supporting marriage equality, he’s extended a message of hope to a generation of young LGBT Americans, helping them understand that they too can be who they are and flourish as part of the American community.

His words also remind gay and lesbian families everywhere that they are not alone or unheard as they struggle – like their neighbors – to afford healthcare and college for their kids, pay their taxes, and plan for retirement.

The burden of discrimination will one day be no more, in part thanks to the President’s leadership at this very moment.

Send a thank-you note to President Obama now.

President Obama has been a crucial ally to our cause. But it’s ordinary people like you, standing up for what’s right, who will continue to drive our movement forward. I thank you for your commitment, and I hope you’ll continue to work for the day when all are equal.

Gratefully,

Joe Solmonese
