New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has introduced federal legislation that would ensure that LGBTQ individuals and couples have the same adoption rights as heterosexual individuals and couples do.
In the news, two Friends in Adoption (FIA) families were recently featured in stories related to this proposed law.
Friends in Adoption (FIA) proudly supports Senator Gillibrand’s bill, and couldn’t be prouder of our LGBTQ families! The “Every Child Deserves a Family” legislation “would prohibit adoption agencies that receive federal funding from discriminating against adoptive or foster parents based on their sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status.”
Currently, LGBTQ adoption discrimination exists on a state by state basis, and this bill seeks to level the playing ground regardless of where in the U.S. potential placing families or prospective adoptive families live, for the benefit of children.
The Family Equality Council sums it up nicely:
“The Every Child Deserves a Family Act focuses attention on the best interests of children . . . By eliminating state laws, policies, practices and procedures that exclude potential adoptive and foster parents because of their marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity, this bill will dramatically increase access to permanent, loving homes for foster care children. One in four children in this country is being raised by a single parent. Six million Americans have a parent who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. We all recognize there is no single type of family in America anymore.”
