We Are a Loving Family Looking to Adopt a Child!
Warmest greetings to you from Nicola, Jonathan, and Sebastian. Above all else we would like you to know that our hearts are with you as you consider an adoption plan as one of your options at this moment. We admire and respect your huge generosity, strength, and courage and are here to support you in any way we can. Through this adoption profile we invite you to learn more about us and our five-year-old son Sebastian, our life together in New York City and the Connecticut shoreline, and our desire to grow our family through adoption. We hope that through our words and the pictures of our life together you will gain a sense of who we are, our strong sense of family and community, and how prepared and committed we are to welcome another child into our happy, loving home. We are honored to be considered as you explore your options and wish you the very best.
The three of us live in a spacious apartment in New York City with two sweet little dogs and have a house in rural Connecticut where we spend weekends, holidays and long happy summers with family and friends. As a family we love to travel and have been lucky enough to explore many parts of the world. We also love to spend days at the beach or in the garden, try new things (recently Sebastian has encouraged Nicola to ride horses and ski!), entertain at home, cook together, and have spontaneous and very silly dance parties. We cannot wait to grow our family through adoption and share our many blessings, abundant goofiness and unconditional love with another child.
“Nicola inspires me to be the best person I can be. She is lovely, poised and accomplished. She spent her childhood between the United States and Portugal, and went all the way through school in England. She holds a doctorate, speaks several languages (including Portuguese, French and Spanish), is well traveled, has an amazing education…and couldn’t be a kinder, more welcoming, generous, and thoughtful person. Meanwhile, she has such a silly streak – listening to her reading stories in various voices and accents can entertain children (and adults) endlessly! She has wide ranging interests, is an amazing cook, and a gifted teacher. She has a great sense of style and organization, skills she uses to provide a happy, comfortable home life for our family. She has a bottomless supply of love – for me, our son, friends, family, and our little dogs. Nicola is thoughtful and empathetic, always trying to understand other people’s points of view. She connects naturally and easily with people of all ages and backgrounds and is always carefully tuned into her audience. For more than half our lives she has been my best friend, my partner, and inspiration. Nicola is always there with support, kind words, or just a hug – she always seems to know what is required. I couldn’t imagine a better partner for me or mother for Sebastian.”
“Jonathan is my best friend and the best partner and parent I could imagine. He is open-minded, generous, patient, thoughtful and positive. He is the most amazing father- so consistent and warm, funny and doting, creative and patient. He enjoys explaining and teaching, and answering the seemingly endless questions of an inquisitive 5-year-old! Even Sebastian’s friends light up when they visit, knowing that Jonathan will do something fun and silly with them. Jonathan is unfailingly polite, empathetic and kind; always able to see the positive in people and situations. No matter how busy life is, he always finds time to volunteer with community/workplace mentoring programs and derives great pleasure from those relationships. Hardworking, honest and loyal, Jonathan is also quite the Renaissance man – an avid reader and good at lots of sports, but he’s also a wonderful cook (especially grilling) and never fails to surprise with his creativity when working on art projects or finding a solution to a problem. There’s no one with whom I’d rather be on this great journey.”
“Sebbie” just graduated from a happy little preschool in New York City that he adored, only a short walk/scooter ride from our apartment. He is so curious about the world – and life between a big city and the countryside gives him an endless stream of questions to ask. Next year he will start kindergarten at a similar sort of school on the same street. Outside of school he takes classes in musical theatre, hip hop dancing(!), swimming and French. Sebastian enjoys lots of fun playdates with friends and trips to the library and playgrounds near our homes. He also spends time playing with his toys and our dogs and drawing and doing craft and science projects with us at home. He has such a happy, full life and we know he will love to share it with a sibling.
Our Little Dogs:
Our Happy Homes:
Our country house on the Connecticut shore is historic and character-filled, with gardens for planting and enjoying meals outside and lots of grass and space to run and play. There are nature trails all around us and our neighbors have a horse farm, so we get to enjoy feeding the horses and the occasional ride. Nicola’s mother “Mimi” is just down the road and we see her all the time. She loves to bake with Sebbie and surprise him (“guess which hand?”) with unusual treats.
In the winter we come up to make snowmen and spend cozy evenings by the fireside. During the summer months we decamp to the countryside (Jonathan works from home and Nicola is off for the summer) and spend long days at the beach with friends and family.
These two very different living environments provide a child with the best of both worlds. Our homes are filled with toys, art, good food, laughter and music.
Our Extended Family:
Jonathan grew up in San Francisco, in the house his parents (“Nana” and “Bompa”) still live in. He has a younger sister, Elizabeth (“Ibbie”), also in San Francisco, and an older brother (“Uncle Stevie”) in Washington, DC, who is the proud father of one-year old cousin Evan. Sebastian is delighted by baby Evan! Stephen and his wife Carolyn are journalists and avid cyclists who gave Sebastian his first bike. Elizabeth is a counsellor who works with young people and Sebastian has lots of fun with her when she visits. These doting grandparents and aunts and uncles all come to spend Christmas with us and a good stretch of time every summer.
Our Friends and Community:
Our friends are truly an extension of our family. They are hugely supportive of our decision to grow our family through open adoption. We also have friends who have adopted through FIA and others who have been adopted themselves and see these beautiful, thriving families as important resources as we embark on this journey.
