Begin Your Adoption Process With Our “Get Acquainted Workshop” (GAW)

The GAW includes actual stories shared by adoptive parents and by birth parents.

Is Friends in Adoption (FIA) right for me? — Before you make a decision about whether FIA is right for you, we feel it’s important for you to understand who we are, how we work, what we expect from prospective adoptive parents, and how we view the adoption process. There’s so much to tell!

So we ask you to start our journey together at the “Get Acquainted Workshop” (GAW). This in-depth workshop will give you a chance to meet our staff, ask questions and relax in a casual setting while exploring the adoption options offered by FIA.

Attendance at a Get Acquainted Workshop is mandatory for all pre-adoptive families who intend to work with FIA. This prerequisite workshop is a wonderful educational opportunity that does not obligate you to work with FIA.

The GAW workshops are scheduled 3 or 4 times/year and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of the workshop is $395 per family unit. This fee covers all meetings and meals during the workshop. Any other expenses related to travel and/or lodging are NOT included with this registration fee and it’s the responsibility of all workshop attendees to make arrangements for their own lodging and travel plans ahead of time. Staying at the same hotel where the GAW takes place is not required.

This workshop is typically held in the Albany/Saratoga area, which is a convenient location for many of our prospective adoptive families who travel in from many geographic locations, near and far. From time to time, FIA will host a workshop in Brooklyn, NY.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Hear adoptive parents tell their experience working with FIA
  • Q&A with birth mothers and/or birth families
  • Meet FIA staff, social workers & other adoption professionals
