Friends in Adoption, proud to be at New York City Pride!
By, Olivia Pope - Community Outreach and Development Manager
This year in New York City, pride month wrapped up thirty days of festivities with a day-long parade and festivals honoring World Pride . The celebration commemorated the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, a series of riots during the sixties that launched the ongoing movement for LGBTQ+ rights.
Kaelan and I, both outreach managers for FIA, had the privilege of tabling at Pride. We were honored to represent Friends in Adoption, an agency that has always been on the forefront of advocating for the LGBTQ+ community. We were excited to be able to pass out new brochures that featured the Human Rights Campaign All Children All Families Innovator’s seal. This has been an accomplishment that the agency has been working towards, and it was rewarding to be able to share FIA’s achievements with those who came by the table to talk about adoption with us.
Pride was full of joy and excitement! Several people came up to speak with us about their experience with adoption, whether they knew a family member/friend who had been adopted, had adopted children, or had been adopted themselves. It was a heartwarming experience to build bridges with strangers over the topic of adoption and LGBTQ+ rights. Both are so important, and both are also so very intertwined when it comes to understanding the roadblocks that the LGBTQ+ community has encountered when it comes to family building.
Friends in Adoption is proud to be a “Fully Inclusive Agency”, and to serve all children and all families at the Innovator level of the Human Rights Campaign.
